Wess - you're right up the road from me. I like your stuff. Unfortunately, very few educator's feel the same way. But I agree on all your main points. I saw an infographic almost 2 years ago that sticks with me. 6 Tenets of Post-Plagiarism. https://drsaraheaton.com/2023/02/25/6-tenets-of-postplagiarism-writing-in-the-age-of-artificial-intelligence/

Most people aren't there yet but I really do think the "whether it's written by AI or written by a human" is going to be fairly moot at some point if it isn't already. But it's a really tough situation when it comes to developing writers which is why all the teacher angst.

Thx Steve! I like the infographic, have you read her book?

I agree that AI makes teaching writing more difficult, but even before chatGPT only a minute fraction of the population was making a living out of writing skills beyond basic literacy. I think the reason we rely so much on written assignment is because it's been the most convenient way to teach how to THINK, not write per se. There are other ways to do that. What do you think?

I have not - the phrase "trying to determine where the human ends and the AI begins will be pointless and futile" has just stuck with me. English teachers will refuse to accept this and are horrified. I've been experimenting with all sorts of stuff in my classes but the writing piece is the one which creates the most headaches for teachers. I teach at an Independent School right down the road from you and I can tell you it's a real problem. I'm trying to get through your post on AI policies because I've been asked to do some consulting with a school in NJ on ways to implement AI into their classrooms. Schools like ours should be out and front on this because we have less bureaucratic layers but it's just not that easy. Nobody quite knows what to do. I also teach an Independent Research class and that has been a great sandbox to experiment with AI.
